Shop/Shipping Helper (entry level mechanic)


JOB TITLE: Shop/Shipping Helper (entry level mechanic)



The basic function of this position will include but is not limited to assisting the shop mechanics in machine repair while backing up the shipping and receiving department.


  • Reports to the Shop Foreman


The duties of the entry level mechanic/millwright (Shop Helper) include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

  • Under supervision tear down, inspect, and report findings on new repair requests.
  • Under supervision complete required repairs and assemble new equipment.
  • Act as back up shipping clerk when required to include loading/unloading trucks and completing proper paperwork.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the shop floor and shipping department.


  • The ability to learn and understand the operation of pumps, gearboxes, compressors, electric motors, and other rotating equipment.
  • Basic computer skills to include email and Microsoft Office
  • Use of precision measuring instruments.
  • Understanding basic mathematics including high school level algebra.
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • A desire to learn a trade and excel within a growing company.


  • Required: High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Preferred: Associates degree, Technical school, or previous experience with rotating equipment.
  • One year direct experience in working as a mechanic/shipping clerk or basic knowledge of rotating equipment, engines, or machining.
  • Able to communicate effectively and complete paperwork to standards.
  • High enthusiasm, energy, and initiative.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Quality conscious and interested in improvement techniques and teamwork.


  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for two thirds or more of time. They may also be required to stand and/or walk for long periods of time while completing other duties and responsibilities.
  • The employee must have a full range of body movements including the use of his/her hands and fingers to handle, feel and operate objects such as machines and computer equipment. The ability to bend the body, to reach for objects, and to crouch when needed is also required.
  • The employee must have the ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds to chest height.


  • This position will be primarily working indoors on the shop floor in varied temperature conditions.
  • Noise level will vary from moderate conditions to extreme and ear plugs should be worn.
  • Odors and air quality may vary and may be unpleasant to some individuals.
  • Work done at customer sites can vary from indoor to outdoor in varied temperature conditions.
  • Safety glasses and shoes are required in all areas on the shop floor.
  • A normal workday is Monday – Friday 7:00-3:30PM. Overtime may be required based upon workloads and personnel requirements.
